How to find out if glass is good quality or not?

Updated: Jun 4, 2020

Have you ever wondered what makes glass good or poor quality?

When it comes to shopping for your house, office, restaurant, etc. you want to make sure you get something that is going to last.

It’s important to note what the ingredients in glassware should be so that you can identify when they are raw materials. If the glass is soda-lime, borosilicate of lead crystal, this is a good sign.

A common misconception with high-quality glass is that it’s thicker than other types of glasses. This is not actually the case. A thick piece, like a 9mm piece is very durable if the glass is high-quality glass. However, if a 9mm is made of crappy quality glass then it’s way more likely to break. So, remember just because a piece is made of thicker glass, does not mean that it’s high-quality glass.

How to find out if the glass is tempered correctly?

Are you confused about finding the right type of glass for the interior? That could be sturdier and stylish at the same time. Well, today, all your woes will be sorted out.

In order to identify it, many people would joke around and say, “Whack it! If it shatters into tiny, bite-size pieces, then it’s definitely tempered.” But, in all seriousness, how do you tell if a glass is tempered without using a hammer?

Check the edges: one good way is to look thoroughly at the edges of the glass. Tempered sheets have smooth and even edges because of the extra processing it goes through. If the edges of the glass are exposed, run your fingers along them. Provided that the roughness is not the result of abrasion, any impression of roughness likely means that the glass isn’t tempered.

Use polarized glasses: if you try to view tempered glass in sunlight with a polarized pair of sunglasses, you will see dark, shady spots or lines stretching across its surface–a prime indicator that the glass is toughened.

Score a line: in addition, you can create a line on the glass using a window cutting tool. But this should be a last resort, only if you plan on cutting the glass. If it creates an uneven and flaky line, it’s tempered.
